Webinar Academy of Nursing on Autonomy

On the occasion of the celebration of '20 years of Zuyd', the alumni committee of the Academy of Nursing is organising a webinar ' Autonomy : The essence of nursing care' on Thursday 16 December 2021. Care activities have been core tasks of nursing care for centuries and support the person seeking care in regaining his or her autonomy. This involves not only the autonomy of the patient but also the autonomy of the nurse. During the webinar, Sandra Zwakhalen looks back on the developments of the past twenty years and focuses on the role of education in relation to nursing care.

Prof Sandra Zwakhalen has been affiliated with Zuyd University of Applied Sciences' Academy of Nursing since 2018. She graduated as a nurse in Sittard. Sandra Zwakhalen has been appointed professor of Nursing Science at Maastricht University (Faculty of Health Medicine and Life Sciences). The chair, which particularly focuses on geriatric care at home, is partly funded by Zuyd University.

The lady with the lamp

In the framework of '20 years of Zuyd' one of the participants of this webinar will be surprised with a Florence Nightingale Guidelight. The Guidelight carries a personal message 'ever yours loving' and the signature of 'The lady with the lamp', Florence Nightingale (1820 - 1910), mother of modern nursing. She became known as 'The lady with the lamp' because she often made the rounds of her patients at night with a lantern. The lantern symbolises the rich history of the nursing profession and is a message of appreciation to all nurses and carers in the Netherlands.
